Today in class we learned about grids, latitude, and longitude. We talked about how geography is the study of where things are found on Earth's surface and how a map is a two dimensional or flat-scale model of Earth's Surface. A very important part of maps are cartographers because they make maps. An old and important Greek cartographer was Eratosthenes. He created a map around 195 BCE, and it was used for many years after it was made. We also discussed the difference between latitude and longitude. Latitude is a geographic coordinate that specifies the north and south position of a point on Earth's surface. They are imaginary lines running parallel to the equator. They’re used to measure the distance in degrees North and South of the equator. Longitude is a geographic coordinate that specifies east and west position. They are imaginary lines circling the Earth and running through the poles. Thy are used to measure the distance in degrees east and west. Latitude and longit...
I was not in class today because I was sick, but I watched the video we were assigned to watch in class. The video was about the Greeks. It talked about how many nations the Greeks defeated. many of these nations were much bigger than they were. In 508 BC, Athens, the people turned on their ruler and demanded freedom. Cleisthenes saw that these people should be free. He thought that they should rule their government. Cleisthenes was born around 570 BC into one of the richest families in Greece. Cleisthenes grew up in privilege. Cleisthenes was taught that he was an aristocrat. In 6 century BC, the aristocrats controlled many things. Many people wouldn't believe in years, Athens, Greece would be so powerful. Athens was poor. The houses were not fancy, and life was simple. Men would work in the field. Women would cook, clean, and weaving. They did not have much education, not many people could read or write. There was no science or medicine. Life expectancy at birth was less than 15...
Today is cyber day 9. We were assigned to research the Plague of Athens during the Peloponnesian War and compare it to the COVID-19 pandemic happening right now. From what I found; the Plague of Athens started in 430 B.C. and lasted until 426 B.C. The Peloponnesian War lasted from 431 B.C. to 404B.C., so Athens was already in war when the plague broke out. When the plague started Athens under siege from Sparta. The plague weakened Athena’s abilities to fight the war, but they stayed strong. They did end up losing though. Some of the symptoms of the plague were high fever, rash, and diarrhea. This is similar to the coronavirus because one symptom is a high fever. Another similarity is that it spread quickly, and badly effected Athens. The corona virus is spreading very quickly and it has affected everyone so we have had to make extreme changes in our lives. Another similarity is how all of Athens was affected by the plague, and the corona virus has affected the entire world....
