Thought about cyber school

I have lost count of the number of cyber days, but today we were assigned to write a thoughtful blog about integrity, new responsibilities, how this affects others, and how we handle this situation. Like what was said in the assignment, this is a new experience for all of us. For some it might be hard to adapt to the situation, for others it might be easier. We are all handling this differently. I think we need to consider everyone involved. From my experiences so far, in the two weeks of cyber school, I can say that I do get frustrated because of the workload that I get somedays. I admit that I find myself trying to find shortcuts to finish earlier sometimes, but most times I actually put a lot of effort in my work. I actually get homework that I have to submit every day, except d and h days, for dance. It is different things like filming we do certain workouts or following along in an online class. Sometimes they can be fun. After reading the blogpost for today, I realize that we ar

Comparing the plague of Athens and the corona virus

Today is cyber day 9. We were assigned to research the Plague of Athens during the Peloponnesian War and compare it to the COVID-19 pandemic happening right now. From what I found; the Plague of Athens started in 430 B.C.  and lasted until 426 B.C. The Peloponnesian War lasted from 431 B.C. to 404B.C., so Athens was already in war when the plague broke out. When the plague started Athens under siege from Sparta. The plague weakened Athena’s abilities to fight the war, but they stayed strong. They did end up losing though.  Some of the symptoms of the plague were high fever, rash, and diarrhea. This is similar to the coronavirus because one symptom is a high fever. Another similarity is that it spread quickly, and badly effected Athens. The corona virus is spreading very quickly and it has affected everyone so we have had to make extreme changes in our lives. Another similarity is how all of Athens was affected by the plague, and the corona virus has affected the entire world. I just h

Philip II, Alexander the Great, and Darius III

Today is cyber day 8 and we were assigned to write three autobiographies about  Philip II, Alexander the Great, and Darius III. We were also told to write about the connection between the three.  Philip II was the King of Spain. He was born May 21, 1527 and died of cancer at age 71 on September 13, 1598. He was the son of Charles V. the duke of Milan. He married many times and had a lot of children. He ruled from ‎ January 16, 1556–September 13, 1598.  Alexander the great was  king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon. He was born  July 356 BC in Pella, Greece. He died at 32 years old in  June 323 BC in Babylon. He took the throne after his father at age 20. He was known as one of the best rulers in history.  Darius III  was the last king of the Achaemenid Empire of Persia. He was born 381. B.C. and died July 330 in Bactria. He married a woman named Stateria, known as Queen of Persia and had 3 children.  Connection between them is that King Philip II was Alexander t

Alexander and Bucephalus

I think today is cyber day 7, maybe, but today we were assigned to do research on the relationship between Alexander and Bucephalus. What I have found from me research was that Bucephalus was a Thessalian horse. In 344 B.C., when Alexander was twelve or thirteen, he won this horse by making a wager with his father. His horse was given to him by a horse dealer for a lot of money. It was worth it though because it was his favorite horse and only Alexander could ride him. Alexander rode him into every battle with the Greek city states, Thebes, and India. Alexander loved his horse a lot. Legend has it that Bucephalus was untamable, but he was tamed by Alexander and became his best friend. Eventually his horse died in 326 B.C., and Alexander was devastated. He decided to name a city after his horse and called it Bucephala.

My cyber week

Today we were assigned to talk about our week so far on cyber school as a student. So far, I haven't had any problems. I have been able to turn in my work, get my assignments, submit them on time, and keep up with my work. I like to start doing my work earlier rather than later because than I am not as motivated, and it takes me longer. In the morning I write down all I have to do for each class first and then I pick what I want to do. I don't really follow the schedule. I am very organized though, which I think makes it easier to focus and get my work done. I like turning in assignments using the drobox. I think that is a great way of submitting things instead of emailing. I really like when I don't get a big workload for the day and I can get my work done and still have a lot of my day left to relax. I haven't even gotten that bored yet over this corona break because I have kept myself busy.

Socrates

Today in cyber day 4. We were assigned to write a paragraph explaining why we think Socrates would start questioning traditional beliefs at this point in history. To help me understand this topic and write my paragraph I watch from 24:30 - 27:30 in the crucible of civilization: Empire in mind video as we were told might help us.  When the Athenian navy won a fight against the Spartans, they were not welcomed home. The Athens journey home was rough and caused them to come home immediately without picking up the soldier who fell overboard during the fight. The generals were thrown in jail because they did not go back and rescue the fallen soldiers. The assembly was convinced that this was a bad crime and all the generals needed to be executed. The fate of these generals only hope was Socrates. Socrates thought for himself and wasn't scared to speak against the rule. I think Socrates started to question the traditional beliefs at this particular point in history because they had

Destruction of Athens

Today is the third day of cyber school. So far, I have found it not that hard to get my assignments and turn them in. Today we were assigned to watch   t he third episode called “Crucible of Civilization: Empire of the Mind.” We  were  also told to watch from 17:14 - 24:46 and write a paragraph.  Athens was getting  destroyed, but they could do nothing about it and just watch. Pericles assured Athens that his plan would work. Athens relied on shipments from overseas to survive. One year into the war, the shipments brought with them a plague. It devastated Athens. The plague spread very fast since most were crammed together. Violent heat, redness and inflammation of the eyes, and uncontrollable  diarrhea. They suffered a lot, many people became terrified, and death was all over Athens. The plague almost destroyed Athens. It killed over 1/3 of the population. Pericles also got infected and died 6 months later in 429 B.C. Pericles death left Athens without a leader. This caused misch

Pericles

Today was our first cyber day since school was canceled for 2 weeks due to the corona virus. Today we were assigned to read pg. 134-139 in our textbook and write a paragraph. Pericles was a statesman, politician, inspiring speaker, and a respectable general who led Athens during its best time. He dominated the life of Athens from 461-429 B.C. This age is known as the Age of Pericles. Pericles goals for Athens was to strengthen the Athenian democracy, hold and strengthen the empire, and to glorify Athens. A direct democracy is a form of government in which the citizens rule directly and not through  representatives. Other city states also ruled under this government, but not many. The Delian league was formed after the defeat of the Persians. Athens took leadership in the league and dominated all the city states in it. The Delian League helped Athens a lot because Pericles used the money from the league to strengthen their navy (the greatest in the Mediterranean) and the safety of

Corona Virus talk

Today in class we talked about the corona virus. We talked about cyber days, the length of time we will get out, the right way to be sanitary, how to stay healthy, and what the virus is/the symptoms. While talking in class we did not know if/when we were going to get out of school and start cyber days. As of tonight, we were told that we are starting cyber days on March 16 and continuing them until March 27, that is a total of 2 weeks. At first when I heard this, I didn't think much of it because we talked about possibly getting out for a month or 2 in class. I was excited until I realized that we might even get longer if the virus spreads faster. I hope we get back before spring break so we can enjoy it. In class we also discussed how to properly wash our hands so we can stay healthy to prevent rising numbers of infected people. I am anxious to hear what our cyber days will be like. I wonder if we will have to start classes at 8 or just given assignments to finish by the end of t

Crucible of Civilization Video

I was not in class today because I was sick, but I watched the video we were assigned to watch in class. The video was about the Greeks. It talked about how many nations the Greeks defeated. many of these nations were much bigger than they were. In 508 BC, Athens, the people turned on their ruler and demanded freedom. Cleisthenes saw that these people should be free. He thought that they should rule their government. Cleisthenes was born around 570 BC into one of the richest families in Greece. Cleisthenes grew up in privilege. Cleisthenes was taught that he was an aristocrat. In 6 century BC, the aristocrats controlled many things. Many people wouldn't believe in years, Athens, Greece would be so powerful. Athens was poor. The houses were not fancy, and life was simple. Men would work in the field. Women would cook, clean, and weaving. They did not have much education, not many people could read or write. There was no science or medicine. Life expectancy at birth was less than 15

Absent

I was absent today.

Pop quiz and notes

Today in class we had a pop quiz and took more notes the PowerPoint. I was not that prepared for this quiz, but I got a 100. I really needed that to push my grade up. Then we talked about Aristotle. Aristotle was a student of Plato (student of Socrates) at the academy. He helped to foster the idea of Athens as an intellectual destination. His school (The Lyceum) focused on research. It was built on knowledge gathered from all over the world. He dreamed of having access to knowledge in one location. He wrote topics on logic, ethics, motion, and metaphysics. He was also hired by King Philip II to tutor Alexander the Great. After we took notes, we are allowed to work on homework. I did my blog which I am writing right now, but I will probably study for my biology test later today (I haven't studied for it yet).

Notes

Today in class we took notes on a section in the textbook and on some slides on the PowerPoint. In the textbook I took notes on how philosopher is a thinker who uses logic and reason to investigate the nature of the universe, human society, and morality. The 2 assumptions of philosophers are that the universe is put together in an orderly way, and subject to absolute and unchanging laws. The other one is that people can understand these laws through logic and reason. Sophists are a group of philosophers who questioned people' unexamined beliefs and ideas about justice and other traditional values. One of the most famous sophists is Protagoras. He questioned the existence of the Greek Gods. Socrates was a critic of Sophists. He encouraged the Greeks to question themselves. Plato was a student of Socrates. Around 370 his most famous work was The Republic. Aristotle was Plato's student. He questioned the nature of the world, human belief, thought, and knowledge. Most of this was

Persian vs Greece

Today in class we took more notes on the Greece PowerPoint. We talked about the Spartans, Greek Battle terms, and the Persian vs. Greek war. The Greeks were warlike people. They were strategic during war since they were small in size. infantry were soldiers who fought on land. the spartan boys trained since they were 7 years old. Athens had a great infantry, but thy had an even better navy (one of the best). they had a trireme which was their most effective weapon. It was the fastest ship in the world at the time. It was rowed by about 170 men on 3 levels. a phalanx was a grouping of warriors. they were armed with spears and interlocking shields. they would advance slowly until they broke through their ranks. the Persian vs. Greek war was a war that shocked everyone. the Persian had a much bigger land and a lot more people. The Greeks had a very small land compared to the Persians. The Greek did have some advantages though. they were fighting on their homeland, so they knew their way

Greek Gods and Goddesses

Today in class we got our test back and started our second part of Greece. We talked about the Greek Gods and Goddesses. The Gods and Goddesses actually interacted with the humans. Some of the Gods and Goddesses are Poseidon - the God of the sea and brother of Zeus. Aphrodite - Goddess of love, beauty, desire, and sexuality. Dionysus - the God of wine and the son of Zeus and Semele. Zeus - God of heaven, earth, the sky, weather, thunder, lightning, law, order, and justice. He is also the father of Athena and he had a temper. Athena - the Goddess of wisdom, skill, warfare, peace, intelligence, battle strategy, and handicrafts. She was born from Zeus' (her father) head and she is the patron of heroes. Apollo - God of music, arts, knowledge, and healing. He is the son of Zeus, his twin sister is Artemis, and he is associated with the sun (his sister is associated with the moon). Demeter - Goddess of grain, harvest, and agriculture. She was Zeus' sister.
